eBay Classifieds Group’s UK Legal Department is looking for a technically-sound, effective and pragmatic in-house e-commerce Privacy and Commercial lawyer to join the eBay Classifieds Group (“eCG”) Legal Department, based in London, to support the eCG UK businesses (Gumtree.com, Motors.co.uk and eBay Motors Group). You will be the primary privacy advisor to eCG’s UK business on all data protection-related matters.

The candidate will be passionate about working in the e-commerce world, acting as a true business partner and advising on a portfolio of e-commerce sites and products on sophisticated online privacy issues.

The ideal candidate should have significant experience in-house, drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts and advising on innovative products/legal issues for an international technology company in the advertising/marketing ecosystem.

This position will report to the Head of Legal for eCG UK. Join us!

Your responsibilities

  • Sitting with the eCG UK business team and acting as their main, real-time, Privacy advisor – guiding business strategy, while also doing operational legal work;

  • Working with business, legal, customer support and other partners to provide privacy guidance on products, functionalities, projects and advising on appropriate risk-based mitigation, and privacy compliance strategies;

  • Conducting Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) on relevant products, functionalities and services involving collection, processing, disclosure, retention and/or deletion of personal data;

  • Negotiating the privacy and commercial components of agreements with advertisers, ad agencies, ad servers, and data management companies, as well as major AdTech/MarTech platforms;

  • Handling responses to critical issues from users and regulators;

  • Establishing and maintaining strong positive engagement with relevant regulators and industry organizations and in particular with the ICO, Trading Standards, the IAB, etc.;

  • Conducting training for the business on data protection matters;

  • Keeping up-to-date with regulatory developments;

  • Coordinating independently and efficiently with the right internal teams, including Information Security, Litigation, IP, etc.;

  • Managing external counsel where necessary;

  • Willingness to take over a DPO position for eCG UK;

  • Working with business stakeholders to understand, structure, negotiate and close complex commercial agreements;

  • Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts for a wide range of services including advertising, marketing, PR, technology and others;

  • M&A integration support.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong understanding and working experience in all privacy laws and regulatory guidance that are relevant to an e-commerce activity in the UK, including the UK GDPR, PECRs, DPA and international global privacy rules and regulations;

  • Strong understanding of all aspects of online advertising including Consent Management Platforms, the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework 2.0, and related legal/regulatory/privacy issues;

  • Minimum of 5 years of privacy legal experience at a law firm and/or in-house, including significant time working with internet, technology and/or media companies in the ad tech/data space (e.g. ad serving, programmatic, data management, measurement and analytics);

  • Experience working in a matrixed, cross-department, cross-functional role requiring good client relationship skills, including the ability to independently solicit the advice and input of different partners as necessary and appropriate;

  • Be qualified to practice law in the UK;

  • Fluent in English language.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Major ecommerce/AdTech platform in-house legal experience;

  • Good relationships with industry organizations and regulators (IAB, privacy regulators, etc.);

  • Certified International Privacy Professional (CIPP/E);

  • Additional privacy certifications (CIPP/M or CIPP/T);

  • An LLM in IT/IP/E-commerce law;

  • Great business rapport building skills and strong business acumen;

  • A practical, solutions-oriented focus, and be comfortable with ambiguity and a fast-paced culture;

  • The confidence to provide real-time legal advice.
