About the team:

We play an instrumental role in connecting people with the things they need and love, anytime, anywhere. The Americas help deliver a personalized shopping experience and seamless access to inventory from down the street and around the world, as well as tailored shopping experiences, including customized buying and selling. eBay aims to drive growth into new markets and drive value in the shopping and selling experience through “building, accelerating, and disrupting.” The team is comprised of marketing, merchandising, operations, business selling, consumer selling, and shipping. Our responsibilities include all aspects of the region including operations in the US, Canada and Latin America.

The Competitive Strategy and Intelligence team leads the charge to empower the Americas business with deep understanding of the competitive landscape. This team partners with key leaders in the business, finance and product teams across eBay to identify, synthesize and quantify, competitive opportunity at a detailed level across multiple business verticals. The team spans skill sets across market research, strategy, analytics and user experience. Reporting to the Senior Director, Strategic Operations, the Sr Manager, Strategic Competitive Research will require strong analytical and strategic acumen, the ability to distill actionable insights from large amounts of data, and the skill to convey compelling stories for eBay’s senior leadership team. This individual is a key hire within a growing team and will be responsible for designing and implementing a series of research initiatives that help eBay better understand where to play, how to win, and how to optimize business strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the business to identify and align on competitive trends building out reporting and program capabilities to monitor and analyze shifts in competitive behavior and market size summarizing on a frequent cadence to key executive stakeholders
  • Develop and provide competitive strategic insights at the industry vertical level including recent trends and KPI tracking in merchandising, marketing, and business operations to help accelerate business strategies and hypothesis and identify potential risks or threats
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative studies that provide guidance on how to prioritize and win key market segments and lead competitive scenario planning
  • Conduct research and develop tracking mechanisms and KPI’s to understand deep industry marketing and site experience insights and trends identifying optimization opportunities and benchmarks for eBay to work to achieve
  • Develop Customer Sentiment Indicators to help inform local vertical strategies working to improve customer satisfaction scores
  • Ability to provide deep user experience, customer journey, and site experience analysis across a broad set of online and app experiences providing strategic recommendations for site enhancements and features to consider
  • Analyze research data to create compelling, insightful storylines that illuminate opportunities and threats for the brand, ability to go deep into financial statements and reports to understand key trends and build out models supporting recommendations
  • Develop and manage vendor partnerships within the technology and competitive insights industry working with both new and established players in the market
  • Author executive level reports and make informed recommendations to key stakeholders and influencers
  • Provide leadership and best practice consultation to a global community of insights professionals while building deep cross-functional partnerships

Required Experience:

  • 8+ years of related work experience in strategy, investment banking, market research and/or customer insights
  • Demonstrated track record for managing multiple research programs in parallel
  • Strong background in strategic brand positioning and dissecting competitive advantages
  • Experience in an ecommerce environment and understanding of core site features, functionality, and user experience
  • Proven acumen in shaping stakeholder questions for maximum impact with the ability to translate needs into appropriate research initiatives
  • Exceptional quantitative and qualitative research method design experience
  • Proven ability to distill actionable insights from complex data and explain findings to clients in a digestible and compelling manner
  • Strong verbal communication skills and experience with senior level client presentations and meetings
  • Bachelor’s Degree in market research, statistics, economics or related field.  Advanced Degree highly desirable
