Job Description Summary
eBay Classifieds Group (ECG) has a full stack software development team in Shanghai, China. It is part of the Emerging Markets Technology team. This team works closely with the rest of the Emerging Markets tech teams in San Francisco and Cape Town to support the six countries running on a multi-tenant platform Bolt, including: South Africa, Mexico, Singapore, Argentina, Poland, and Ireland.
To run this team smoothly, we are looking for a hands-on technology people leader.
Lead an Agile team of developers (10+) to participate in development and support of ECG Emerging Markets’ BOLT platform.
Identify all requirements and helping developers to scope the work.
Work with Product Manager to ensure all stories are in place and help with prioritization.
Work closely with fellow development teams in San Francisco, California, and Cape Town, South Africa to coordinate and resolve dependency issues.
Delivery of all features, requirements, bug fixes and enhancements with high quality.
Help developers resolve blockers to fulfill their duties.
Participate in hands on development, and work with San Francisco architects to provide architecture designs.
This is also a people manager role. This person is responsible for all administrative aspects of management, including contractor SOW management, 1:1 meetings with developers, clarifying expectations and setting goals, and helping team members with their career development.
Most of this position’s peers are in different countries. Communication, ability to work with different cultures, and conflict resolution are also important part of this job.
Since the Emerging Markets team’s HQ is in San Francisco, this person needs to be able to resolve time zone issue and participate in regular meetings with California via video conference. Traveling overseas is expected from time to time.
Own and drive various components of eBay Classifieds Bolt System.
Manage a team of developers designing and implementing new features to enhance Bolt classifieds platform.
Participate and work with leadership, product management, quality counterparts in strategic planning and management for resources, environments and releases
Work with fellow development managers and architects in San Francisco to ensure seamless collaboration.
Own scheduling and on-time delivery of features throughout the software development lifecycle.
Work across platform, operations, development teams, and cultures to deliver highly scalable and reliable software deployment and management services.
Architect and deliver a strong development process that ensures high quality and business agility.
Provide timely and appropriate communication to stakeholders, and customers on issue status and resolution.
Recruit and retain top talent and passionate about growing them.
Be a technical thought leader for the team and provide direction whenever required.
Able to roll up the sleeves and have hands in the code to contribute to project personally.
Able to perform code and design review for team members to ensure high quality.
Mentor team members so that they can perform to their fullest potential.
Be a manager of team leaders, be able to delegate and track tasks to teams
Able to travel to San Francisco and other international locations when necessary.
Be the bridge between technology and business, prioritize tasks by business impact and technical complexities.
BS or MS degree in Computer Science or related field.
Experience with agile development methodologies
A deep understanding to object-oriented design and programming, data structures and algorithms.
Knowledge of professional software engineering practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, unit testing and functional testing.
10+ years’ experience of software development, 3+ years dev team management experience.
Strong verbal and written communication skills in Mandarin and English.
Prior experience collaborating with overseas teams in Silicon Valley or European countries.
Business acumen. Able to link software project development to business success.
Proven ability to architect robust, scalable, high-performance systems
Solid RDBMS experience, familiar with SQL
Java application debugging and DB performance issues.
