We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the team to build the next generation of content understanding technologies in eBay Search. The ideal candidate will possess a good balance of technology and people management skills. Job Responsibilities

  • Guide and help the team to seek scientific solutions to multiple complex and ambiguous problems by crafting a technical vision and driving consensus across teams.
  • Mentor and grow an energetic, diverse, and driven team with a good mix of talent across levels
  • Recruit and build great engineering talent, motivate and inspire them to do their best everyday
  • Instill culture of technical excellence, engineering best practices, and high quality product and strive for execution efficiencies
  • Think through complex research problems, simplify where necessary, invent when needed, to drive a principled vision from thought to reality.
  • Drive vision, define and standardize methodologies, establish processes, and operationalize machine learning solutions across teams and projects.
  • Understand the business goals and metrics, and enable your org towards achieving these goals
  • Collaborate with partner teams and work closely with product managers to define and execute on the strategy.
  • Present key technical and novel research work in public forums and conferences

Basic Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent.
  • 5-8 years (with PhD) or 8-12 years (with MS) of industrial experience in a related field
  • Proven experience leading high impact projects or teams related with one or more of the following: information retrieval, ranking systems (multi-objective optimizations), unsupervised learning, cutting edge NLP techniques (transformers-based models), computer vision, recommendation systems, scalable K-nearest neighbors search, machine learning experimentation
  • Experience in e-commerce and large scale search engines (preferred)
  • 3-5 years of experience managing high performance technical teams, helping product organization define and deliver high impact projects for the customers, defining vision and strategy.
  • Proven hands-on experience working with large scale distributed systems: running complex machine learning models at scale, NoSQL databases, Messaging systems, Low-latency / high throughput services, cloud-based micro services, handling billions of transactions per day.
  • Strong Industrial Experience in big data processing, e.g. Hadoop, SQL, Spark, Flink, Kafka, K8s.
  • Experience with Python, and Java or Scala, Deep Learning frameworks (Pytorch / Tensorflow)
  • 2 or more related publications in quality conferences or journals (preferred)
