The Global Payments, Billing & Risk (GPBR) function at eBay works to ensure great experiences when buyers and sellers come together and engage in commerce on the biggest marketplace in the world. This involves comprehensively understanding Payments, Billing & Risks on platform. Identifying the opportunity areas and helping build scalable solutions to drive phenomenal user experience.

Analytics is critical for a data driven Risk function. Core analytics capabilities include the ability to instrument critical metrics, identify the landscape of the entire function, determine opportunities for improvement, work with product and payment providers to craft scalable solutions, and monitor their performance. We build this behavioral intelligence by exploring creative interpretations of existing and new sources of data, using sophisticated analytical techniques, and overlaying the appropriate strategies to deliver exceptional results.

We are multi-disciplinary with a broad spectrum of industry experiences and deep analytical and quantitative expertise. We are currently seeking a high energy, driven, collaborative team member that brings extensive problem-solving skills to further the goal of applying cutting-edge risk analytics, insights and visualization to drive the risk management roadmap.

The role is data and analytically intensive. Successful candidates should be quick learners, strategic problem solvers, operational and execution driven facilitators, problem solvers, and have an entrepreneurial spirit. This role is heavily cross-functional and ideal for candidates who enjoy both defining and solving complex problems, while getting deeply involved in the classification domain and product partners. Skills in problem definition, rigorous analysis, and recommendation development will also be essential as well as demonstration of exceptional interpersonal skills, initiative and integrity.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Lead a team of 2-4 analysts who build data instrumentation and generate insights to root out high-risk activity across the eBay platform 

Frame a business question in terms of analytics and structure the required analyses.

Work with large volumes of data; extract and manipulate large datasets, using eBay’s substantial and rich databases.

Drive deeper understanding of the function thorough analytics and draw insights to drive business in right direction.

Drive engagement with business units with accurate measurement and forecast initiative benefits.

Work with global partners (like Risk Policy, Risk Product, Technology, Trust, Operations, Compliance, InfoSec, & Payment Providers).

Understand entry points for fraudulent sellers and fraudulent buyers.

Produce data driven insights that prevent fraud and create extraordinary user experiences.

Facilitate timely and informed decision making by delivering high quality analytical results.

Drive insights and understanding to help design, plan, and execute methodologies to measure successes of business initiatives.

Develop, improve and systemize crisp & accurate reporting.

Streamline processes and identify/execute on automation and time-saving opportunities.

Rapidly learn new concepts (technical, risk, business, registration/payments flow, external innovation in payments relevant to risk management) is a critical success factor in this role

Improve risk decision-making by balancing loss mitigation with growth and seller experience 

Design and report on critical metrics to leadership 


Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, MIS or other quantitative fields

5+ years of professional experience in using data to facilitate business decisions

Deep understanding of risk analytics in multiple areas: account take over, stolen financials, abuse, chargebacks, collusion risk, etc.

Advanced understanding of SQL/SAS/Python, Strategy Tools (Knowledge Seeker or similar) and Control group testing (or A/B test, Experiment design)

Extensive experience in BI/DW best practices

Experience in efficient manipulation and analysis of large data sets

Good judgement with the ability to think creatively, analytically and strategically. You possess excellent problems solving skills

Consistent history of collaborating across complex organizations

Exceptionally attentive to detail and embracing of teamwork

People-oriented; eager to build positive and productive relationships with a variety of stakeholders

Experience interpreting data trends and using a multitude of disparate data sources and tools

Ability to shift priorities quickly, while maintaining a high degree of organization and control
