We are looking to hire a Sr. Manager, Data Science – Paid Search. As a critical member of the Marketing Insights team position will be a key contributor in the Customer Growth & Performance marketing team, with a vision to find analytical insights, design tests, and help prototype solutions to drive transformative change in the on and off eBay customer experience that results in significant business growth. We mine the largest datasets in the world of e-Commerce and use best in class analytic and big data techniques to extract impactful insights.

The individual in this position will work in close partnership with product and business teams supporting our Google and Bing partnerships across search engine marketing (SEM), using data/insights to drive strategy including creation and evaluation of insights and products driving growth. She/he will lead a team of data scientists to support key strategic initiatives developing advanced testing methods (Bayesian/synthetic controls / etc) to measure incrementality and optimize investment in the SEM channel. Additionally, this position will develop and manage implementation of machine learning models in support of channel growth and optimization, mine billions of rows of data for insights, and “hack” solutions when the opportunity isn’t being seized. They will then take all these aspects and synthesize them into a clear story to drive leadership to a decision. All in a day’s work!

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Strike a balance between critical thinking and actual hands-on analyses using tools & packages such as SQL, R, Python, Tableau etc.
  • Provide thought leadership to the team and stakeholders on analytical innovation in measurement and attribution of paid media to drive optimization within Paid Search media channel
  • Keep up to date on recent research/ analytical approaches to measurement/modeling of incrementally and causal impact
  • Design and readout many variants of testing; A|B, synthetic controls, multi-armed bandit, etc
  • Measure value and impact of On & Off eBay Marketing efforts
  • Create metrics and reporting to identify trends in customer acquisition, retention, end-user demographics, seasonality, and geography by customer segment, channel, and product
  • Access data from data warehouse and external sources (e.g. Partner APIs)
  • Understanding customer data flow across products to find points of friction
  • Assist business partners in setting benchmark goals as appropriate
  • Create and present formal readouts of analysis to marketing and senior leadership
  • Other duties may be assigned

  • Self-starter who needs minimal direction and able to effectively manage through ambiguity

Prior experience in media analytics is preferred but not required, as long as overall analytics/data science skills and ability to learn are strong


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Data Science, Statistics or related technical field. May be substituted with relevant experience and proven track record. Advanced degree a plus
  • 8+ years modeling, statistical and business analysis experience in a Big Data environment required (R, Python, PySpark, SQL)
  • 5+ years of experience supporting Marketing or Product teams
  • Experience in analytics and attribution of digital media is a plus
  • Strong quantitative analysis and data mining skills
  • Experience and strength in identifying insights from data and ability to translate sophisticated business & analysis in simple layman terms
  • Experience working with cross functional business partners
  • Excellent communication skills to clearly present business and technical issues, ideas, and recommendations in verbal, written, and presentation formats.
