Hybrid IC + People Manager

As a Design Lead (Manager) on the Payments design team, you will be an integral member of a growing organization that encourages passion, courage and inventiveness – crafting the future of global commerce and making an important, positive impact on millions of eBay sellers and shoppers around the world. You will engage with product leadership to identify customer problem areas, highlight opportunities, craft user experience strategies and present customer narratives to executives to ensure we are delivering the right experiences for eBay buyers and sellers holistically.

Design leaders at eBay design craft and execute a vision for compelling products and customer experiences. You will partner closely with multi-disciplinary contributors and leaders to bring new customer experiences to life and opportunistically improve our existing ones. You will strive to deeply understand the needs of our customers.

About you

  • You are a systems problem solver with proven success at tackling design challenges that cut across a large ecosystem of features, platforms, and channels. You'll make sophisticated, appealing and useful proposals for user experiences that drive engagement and dedication to eBay.

  • Soft skills will also be incredibly important as you forge relationships across teams and across functions to help us all realize our future vision for eBay. You'll need persistent attention to detail as well as an eagerness to solve difficult design problems for products that may already be in flight.

  • Champions design and user-centered principles throughout the design org and with key stakeholders. You’re confident, not cocky, with a willingness to challenge ideas for the sake of the right solution for the customer/business.

  • Team culture is important to you, and you actively work to empower teams and embrace the eBay culture. You can work with little supervision, but love to collaborate.

Responsibilities

  • Build world-class, user-centered designs that balance business requirements, insights from product, data and research teams, customer needs and feedback from executive leadership

  • Create conceptual diagrams, user flows, wireframes and high-level prototypes and present compelling customer narratives in an executive leadership setting.

  • Simultaneously manage multiple workstreams, owning multiple products and high-profile initiatives

  • Scope/plan work, oversee projects, develop timelines, manage work and allocate resources using software such as monday.com or JIRA.

  • facilitating discovery sessions, workshops and design discussions.

  • Be a strategic leader, crafting a vision for the team and acting as the point of contact for the team and the work

  • Ensure appropriate stakeholder involvement at the right time, to gather and accommodate feedback

  • Effectively communicate your team's charter and goals within a complex global organization

  • Mentor and manage a team of Designers. Play an active role in their careers — providing real-time feedback as well as quarterly check-ins, mid-year and year-end reviews.

  • Partner across organizational boundaries (Product, Engineering, etc.) to solve new customer problems end-to-end, making joint decisions and ensuring accurate and realistic deliverables.

  • Consider the full E2E UX while crafting solutions, working cross-domain to ensure a consistent, holistic experience. Identify themes, overlap and areas for improvement take ownership of them, escalating when necessary.

  • Participate and present in reviews (Design team, Manager, Director, Sr. Director, VP and above)

  • Keep an eye on the competition, market trends, customer behavior and share insights with your team and leadership as appropriate

  • Communication: Having strong verbal, written, visual and in-person presentation skills with a verbal and written proficiency of English in order to present user flows and high-level designs to partners remotely and in-person is a must

  • Hands-on design: Proven ability to build conceptual diagrams, experience maps and user flows; familiarity with design system patterns and primitives implementation

  • Confidence: Proficiency in clearly articulating UCD solutions and design decisions, understanding business requirements, and frequently collaborating with executive leadership

Essential qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience as a user experience designer, design strategist, lead or similar role

  • 3+ years of experience directly managing a team

  • A portfolio that showcases relevant design projects and includes your process, design explorations and final work based off your experience in UX design, service design, information architecture, interaction or visual design and prototyping

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple efforts in different stages of development and switch between discovery and design tracks in a single conversation

  • Frequently context-switch throughout the day

  • Experience designing for small business, retail or transactional products for web, iOS and Android

  • Experience with Figma or equivalent design apps, and presentation apps

  • Bachelor's degree in a user experience design-related field or equivalent industry experience

You’ll wow us if you also have experience with:

  • Facilitating workshops, leading design sprints

  • Human-centered design principles, working with design researchers

  • Experience with financial services, payments, ecommerce cart / checkout, point-of-sale

  • Selling on eBay or other marketplaces
