Senior Director, Distinguished Engineer

London, England Requisition Number R0018124 Subsidiary eBay

Looking for a company that inspires passion, courage and imagination, where you can be part of the team shaping the future of global commerce? Want to shape how millions of people buy, sell, connect, and share around the world? If you’re interested in joining a purpose driven community that is dedicated to creating an ambitious and inclusive workplace, join eBay – a company you can be proud to be a part of.

Do you want to be part of the team that architects the industry’s most powerful and innovative e-commerce technology stack? eBay’s Structured Data (SD) team is embarking on an exciting journey to define and expose the common language of e-commerce. We are achieving this through large scale knowledge acquisition from internal and external sources, creating the ontology of exchangeable things that we expose as a wide variety of interfaces including the product catalogue, product metadata, listing-product matching, pricing, selling intelligence (trending etc), and numerous other APIs. Machine intelligence is also part of our remit and we are responsible for all language translations through our NLP group, as well as computer vision.

The SD R&D team is comprised of highly motivated, creative engineers tasked with leading this charge by shaping eBay’s technology and cultural roadmap. Our engineers, researchers and data scientists are not limited by their job title - they are free to roam our entire technology space to deliver what eBay’s customers want.

SD uses a wide variety of tools from across the stack including state of the art machine learning technologies including our own proprietary high performance vector space processing technology. We have services written in a number of frameworks including Docker and Kubernetes, OpenStack and public cloud, as well as highly optimized bare metal installations. We also make extensive use of Hadoop and TeraData. We also use a number of programming languages including C++, Go, Scala, Java, Python, Ruby and R, and our creativity is not limited by language choice - we are free to choose the best solution to the problem.

SD services are exposed through APIs - generally RESTful JSON - and are built on top of the internal SD platform. This platform comprises a number of engines which are developed in one of two styles: augmented open source or built in-house, and we are continually thoughtful about how we interact with and participate in the open source community. And we do all of this at massive scale with industry leading reliability.

We are looking for talented, highly motivated, hands-on industry leaders that are engineers at heart who lead by example and embody technical leadership and engineering excellence. These high performing individuals will help take eBay to the next level through unparalleled technical innovation and will be seen as company wide change agents driving our technical direction for the next decade and beyond. These world class industry leaders will help define the technical and strategic vision and direction of the company, help drive the company’s technical core forward to deliver on that vision, work across eBay divisions to achieve new growth and business impact, and engage and influence both eBay and external industry leaders to drive excitement around being part of the eBay and its ecosystem.

These leaders will be the greatest attractors of the industry’s finest technical talent and inspire a new generation of engineering and scientific accomplishments.
