Looking for a company that inspires passion, courage and creativity, where you can be on the team shaping the future of global commerce? Want to shape how millions of people buy, sell, connect, and share around the world? If you’re interested in joining a purpose driven community that is dedicated to crafting an ambitious and inclusive work environment, join eBay – a company you can be proud to be with.

We are eBay:

eBay, a pioneer in eCommerce, prides itself for being where the world goes to shop, sell and give. We connect 25 million sellers to 180 million active buyers across 190 markets to participate in global commerce of 1.2 billion listings - one of the largest product catalogs in the world.

Our vision for commerce is one that is enabled by people, powered by technology, and open to everyone. We work hard to create a level playing field where all players, big or small, have the same economic opportunity.

The Opportunity

**Open to hiring multiple locations across the U.S. and will consider full time remote**

eBay is looking for a seasoned Senior Technical Architect to join their global growth organization. The Architect will help build the world’s best digital marketing platform, leveraging best of breed technologies and eBay’s enormous amount of data to support its customers and grow the business.

This role will be a senior technical individual contributor. eBay Marketing is working on a next generation messaging platform to delight eBay’s customers with personalized, simplified messages at the right time through the right channel enabled by highly tuned AI/ML algorithms. They will help enable the current marketing channels (e.g. email, banners, Mobile, Hub and Message Center), while making it easy to experiment with and scale to future channels. This leader will work closely with the data science teams to better empower and leverage science for improved personalization, inspiration, and conversion across eBay’s various marketing channels. This entails working across hundreds of services, millions of lines of code sending billions of timely and relevant messages.

You will help set the standard on engineering practices and overall technical architecture. You’ll work on hard problems, build high quality, reliable and scalable systems that support and accelerate customer value. You can translate business needs into technology solutions working across organizations and roles. Your expertise is deep and broad; you are hands on, producing both detailed technical work and high-level architectural designs. You can work from the boiler room up to the boardroom.

In this role you will:

  • Defining the longer-term vision, architecture, and related design principles for eBay’s digital marketing platform;

  • Serve as a technical lead on our most fast paced, multi-functional messaging platform.

  • Effectively partnering across the broader marketing organization to understand the business and product needs and ensure the technical strategy meets those requirements;

  • Demonstrate your knowledge of internal and industry prior art in design decisions.

  • Functionally deconstruct sophisticated problems into simple, straight-forward solutions that demonstrate significant creativity and judgment.

  • Help drive software velocity and quality improvements across all of eBay marketing engineering using TDD and DevOps approaches. If you are deeply familiar with Gene Kim’s The Phoenix Project and The Unicorn Project, you’ll fit right in.

  • Fully and completely understand system interdependencies, trade offs, and limitations.

  • Ability to understand existing tech stack, opportunistically reuse components where appropriate, migrate to new stack with an eye towards the migration costs.

  • Get into the details, write code, and ultimately deploy successful frameworks and systems that can be demonstrated for a broad set of business use cases across eBay.

  • Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience.

  • Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and the community on complex technical issues.

  • Improve business results by helping to evolve Marketing software and service architecture.

Required Qualifications:

  • Preferred Master's degree in computer science, or equivalent experience

  • 15-20+ years of relevant, broad engineering experience leading the delivery of services and large-scale distributed systems

  • Strong customer focus, excellent communication and relationship building skills. Ability to frame a problem clearly and meaningfully.

  • Possess expert knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering standard methodologies, including traceability, monitoring and alerting for efficient production support.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead the development of multiple features of an application and coordinating cross-team consensus and delivery of a product release.

  • Experience with TDD, pairing, code reviews, and other techniques to maintain high-quality code and resiliency.

  • Strong advocacy of automated testing, continuous delivery, and software quality across the software development life-cycle.

  • Proven track record in successfully delivering large scale enterprise-wide solutions, from design to development to testing to production

  • Experience with service-based architectures, Domain-Driven Design, and reactive / event-driven systems

  • Experience mentoring/training a broad engineering community on difficult technical issues

  • Willingness to dive deep into details. Iterative approach to problems and solutions.

  • Solid understanding of Java, Spring, Messaging Systems, Front End (ReactJS), Docker, and Kubernetes, Web technologies, RESTful Services, Design Patterns, Databases and Streaming technologies.

  • Experience in building large scale, distributed, highly available systems

  • Customer centric thinking and should act as a bridge between product and engineering teams across different locations

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity in a fast paced environment, while still focusing on goals.

  • Self-motivated, passionate for technology, and a strong driver for results, continuous improvement and open source.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in a B2C environment

  • Experience with building cloud based services and platforms

  • Experience working with Open-Source technologies

  • Ease in designing and writing high-performance, reliable, and maintainable code

  • Proven ability in Lean and Agile software development methodologies
