Data Scientist - Cyber Crime Security

Primary Job Responsibilities 

Seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Cyber Crime Security team at eBay in a Data Scientist (Cyber Crime) role. This position will require the candidate to work directly with our business partners to research, develop and deploy next generation data and knowledge applications on multiple technologies for high data volume environments.

The candidate is expected to be effective as an individual contributor, team player, and a champion for results and incremental improvement. In addition to this, the candidate will be expected to have an excellent grasp of designing and implementing Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence solutions. 

Giving back to the community by supporting our customers, sellers and partners through outreach is strongly supported and central to our ethos. Expect to author white-papers, speak at conferences and meet with our community.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Collaborate with other researchers, engineers, and product teams to develop strategic and tactical applications for our Cyber Crime Security team

  • Design and implement end to end solutions using machine learning and AI

  • Work with data scientists, engineers, and cross functional teams to produce end-to-end production-ready solutions

  • Conceptualizing, coding, deploying, and iterating on next generation prototypes

  • Work well independently and in multi-group cross-discipline environments

  • Drive a culture of quality, performance, scalability, and reliability

  • Support the professional growth of the team through mentoring, coaching, and technical leadership

  • Flexible approach to analyzing technical issues and clearly communicating recommendations/solutions

  • Cross team development with Product managers, Project managers, engineers, and QA to deploy innovative solutions to meet business unit requirements

  • Proficient in waterfall and agile development methodologies

  • Creating testing harness/infrastructure/test cases/automation geared towards ensuring quality of product

  • Importantly, the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical people and the ability to go deep with engineers 

Working with eBay Teams  

  • Work with Engineers, Developers, Architecture, Product Management, Quality, and Operations teams to improve eBay cyber crime prevention, resilience and response.

  • Coach, guide and mentor teams on the cyber crime landscape

  • Obsessed with reducing cyber crime risk

  • Communicate insights and recommendations across the organization

  • Close collaboration and alignment with all relevant eBay departments and partners across the business within a dynamic, success-oriented culture

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to create awareness and engagement outputs with the various teams and stakeholders


  • PhD or substantial equivalent experience. 

  • At least five years of industry experience in machine learning, statistical modeling and coding

  • Deep understanding of machine learning methods and evaluation methods.

  • Proven experience leading data science teams

  • Proficiency in working with graph databases

  • Experience working with online and offline machine learning algorithms

  • Development of ML/AI solutions within 3-tier and microservice architectures

  • Proven success in developing both batch and streaming/real-time analytics

  • Proficiency in SQL as well as Hadoop, Spark, or related technologies

  • Proficiency in Python

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Outstanding design and problem solving skills, passion for quality and engineering excellence at scale.

  • Have a genuine love for technology, a curiosity for playing with the latest tools and open source frameworks, and the ability to work in a fast paced, iterative development environment

  • Existing relationships with relevant industry networks. 

  • Highest standards of personal integrity, professional conduct and ethics. 

  • Ability to articulate and visually present complex analysis results to non-technical audiences. 

  • Excellent written (report writing) and verbal communication skills with prior experience of briefing and presenting to senior executive level.
