This role is part of the Global Growth Customer Science team and requires a combination of team and science product management as well as advanced analytics and data science experience. This is a unique opportunity to lead a team that is deeply focused on understanding eBay customers and their needs on a two-sided marketplace. The aim of this team is to utilize advanced modelling approaches to identify and understand customer behaviors, including their journeys and behavioral patterns. These processes will be used to create advanced customer classifications for audience identifications and generate deeper insights about the customer groups to enable the right customer communication content and activation strategies.

This role will need to:

  • Lead team of 4 data scientists with potential to grow team in future

  • Be responsible for the science & data strategy which helps eBay to better understand customers

  • Provide thought leadership on what Customer lenses eBay needs to develop and maintain, based on internal and external customer data and developed using machine learning methods

  • Be able to devise methodologies and approaches to exploring the data and discovering the right science solutions needed

  • Collaborate with the rest of the Customer Science team across several geographies

  • Collaborate with and evangelize customer data driven findings across all of eBay’s marketplace and global teams

  • Be comfortable being deep into the solution details while also crafting summary level presentations that help the larger eBay business understand the “Why” behind science, data and insights

  • Be an expert on eBay’s customer data - both internal and external data as well as be proficient in GDPR and US data legal requirements; collaborating with technology teams to ensure that the right data is in place for the wider Customer Science team

The Customer Science team consists of several data science teams and is split across three geographies. Role location is flexible to one of eBay’s US or EU based offices. The candidate should enjoy applying research to real-world problems.

The preferred qualifications are:

  • Masters degree or above in a quantitative field, e.g., statistics, mathematics, physics, computer science, economics, engineering.

  • Excellent logical, analytical and conceptual skills.

  • Good understanding of experimental design and statistics.

  • Strong data-driven decision making.

  • Very good verbal, written communication, and presentation skills.

  • Ambitious, self-starter attitude; able to adapt to emerging challenges and execute under ambiguity.

  • 10+ years experience developing Customer Data Driven Sciences with at least 5+ years experience in people management and owning science as a product.

  • Shown experience working with C-level executives, developing content that is appropriate for this level of audience and delivering company wide customer strategies
