The Role

This role leads eBay’s external developer program and builds the platform that annually drives over $25B in Gross Merchandise Sold and over $3B in Gross Merchandise Bought. This leader will maintain eBay’s successful ecosystem and line of business, and will drive innovation in API-driven eCommerce.

This role encompasses both business strategy and engineering leadership. It requires a deep understanding of APIs, creative and innovative business strategies, and a customer-centric product development organization. This role reports directly to the Chief Architect, and has significant latitude and independent leadership opportunities internal and external to eBay.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver feature-rich, high quality, secure, and modern APIs and tools that support eBay business objectives and priorities across our global Customer base.

  • Provide a world-class developer experience to internal and external developers that build on or integrate with eBay’s global API platform.  Manage the teams and strategies for API engineering, customer service, technical writing, and developer engagement.

  • Manage a P&L that is responsible for generating $3.75B in Gross Merchandise Bought in 2022 by generating new integration models, architecting new strategic partnerships, and building a platform for external developers to perform self-service integrations with eBay.

  • Collaborate effectively with product development and engineering teams across the entire company. Understand their needs, and work with them to propose solutions to help them do their jobs better.

  • Serve as the senior API product expert to the CEO, Business Strategy, Markets, Product, Legal, Security, and other C-suite and P&L leadership across eBay.

  • Manage the Developer Platform team’s key software delivery metrics, including lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and mean time to restore.

  • Drive the Developer Platform team’s improvements in end-to-end flow metrics, including flow velocity and flow efficiency

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in leading a software production organization at scale.

  • Experience in leading teams that deliver high quality, complex software from global locations to a global customer base.

  • Experience with developing and executing business strategies that rely on full-stack API software development.  

  • Customer-driven product development practices and customer engagement programs.

  • Ability to balance the needs of creating feature rich, high quality applications that drive billions of transactions with the needs of managing the risks and debt associated with a 20-year old program in a tight, global regulator environment. 

  • Comfortable communicating and influencing cross-functionally, and across management levels in formal and informal settings

  • Demonstrated experience in building and leading high-performing engineering teams.

  • Practical expert and thought leader with keen business acumen. Experience in speaking and publishing externally is a plus.  External board memberships are a plus.  Patents are a plus.

  • Proven experience working in an agile environment with cross-functional teams

  • 12+ years of product development experience with 8+ years in a leadership role. 4 years experience in API Platforms and / or Developer Relations.  Desired additional experience in: Ecommerce; external partnerships; managing a P&L.

  • Preferred Master's degree or higher in a related field.
